Is Your Home Electrically Ready for Winter?

Cold weather is on the way -- and your home's electrical system is about to work a little harder.
Before winter settles in, October is a good time to take a quick look at a few things that can help keep your home safe, comfortable and ready for the season.

YOUR FALL ELECTRICAL CHECKLIST

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Check exterior lighting as daylight hours get shorter
  • Inspect outlets and extension cords used for heaters or seasonal equipment
  • Pay attention to breakers that trip repeatedly
  • Watch for flickering or dimming lights
  • Check GFCI outlets in garages, kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor areas
  • Make sure your electrical panel can safely handle any new equipment or added electrical demand
And if you're planning to use portable space heaters this winter, remember: they should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.

Notice something that doesn't seem right? Don't wait for a small electrical issue to become a bigger winter problem.
